Department of Defense, Director, Personnel Recovery PolicySummary: A complete pleasure and total learning opportunity. The time Ambassador Ray took to first educate, then teach me on the best ways to build trust and unity among parties who historically dislike or distrust each other are what make me a success today. I will cherish his mentorship throughout the remainder of my professional career and for the rest of my life.

Charles Ray, Principal DirectorSummary: Working with Charles Ray has been an extremely rewarding experience. I have learned more about leadership and managment from him than any other leader in my career. This has been my best assignment in the military primarily because I had the honor to work for Ambassador Ray.

U.S. Department of State, Economic/Commercial OfficerSummary: I enjoyed Ambassador Ray's ability to set the tone and vision of the Embassy. I enjoyed even more his rare ability to then let us do our jobs while still staying in touch with us. He knew who we were and what we were doing without micromanaging us.

I've read a number of good books recently on leadership. One of the best was "Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson. I also like Warren Bennis' "Managing People is Like Herding Cats."

Sir,
Thank you for your service and our freedom, I do not take that for granted. I read your article on Leadership in the global world and found it very insightful. The kind of leadership that you are talking about comes from a book called Coaching For Improved Workplace Performance. It is one of the books that were recommended to me by the former CEO of Jack In The Box. It simply states that a leaders job is to do whatever possible to remove the impediments of the team. Success is not measured by ones own accomplishment, but by the accomplishments of the team. The young Sergeant that you speak of reminds me of the Marines' Chesty Puller. At the battle of the Chosen Reservoir he was surrounded on all sides; instead of panic he said great, then any direction I aim I am sure to hit one of them! Uncommon valor was a common virtue. What leadership books would you say have had the most impact on your life? I look forward to reading your book soon.

Mainly because the Japanese and the Okinawans want them out. They have been a sore point in our bilateral relations since the reversion of Okinawa - especially the Marines, I'm sad to say. This is part of the general retrenchment in the Pacific. Most people out there don't really want us, until they are in trouble.
