Department of Justice Internship Programs

To enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilt

There are two internship programs available to Law Students in the Department of Justice:

- The Summer Law Intern Program and
- The Volunteer Legal Recruitment

The Summer Law Intern Program (SLIP) is the Department’s competitive recruitment program for compensated summer internships. Selection for employment is based on many elements of a candidate’s background including academic achievement, law review or moot court experience, legal aid and clinical experience, and summer or part-time legal employment. The Department also considers specialized academic studies (including undergraduate and post-graduate degrees), work experience, and extracurricular activities that directly relate to the work of the Department.

Eligibility for the Summer Law Intern Program

Law students who have completed at least one full semester of legal study by the application deadline are eligible to apply. Most successful applicants intern the summer between their second and third year of law school; however, graduating law students who are entering a judicial clerkship or full-time graduate law program may intern following graduation subject to eligibility rules. Part-time law students are also eligible.

The Summer Law Intern Program accepts applications from current law students who have completed at least one semester of full-time study by the application deadline (September 2, 2008) for employment in the summer of 2009. Select the appropriate link below to determine whether you are eligible to apply for the for the 2009 Summer Law Intern Program. Please note that these tables do not address citizenship issues.

A. Full-time law students: You are eligible if you are currently attending law school and have completed at least one full semester of law school by September 2, 2008.

B. Part-time law students: You are eligible if you are currently attending law school and have completed the equivalent of one semester of full-time law school by September 2, 2008.

C. Law Students Graduating in the 2008-2009 academic year: You are eligible if you will graduate from law school in the 2008-2009 academic year (e.g., between December 2008 and September 30, 2009) and you meet one of the conditions below:

• You will enter a judicial clerkship within 9 months after law school graduation, or • You will begin a full-time graduate law program (e.g., L.LM) within 9 months after law school graduation. (Law school graduates who begin non-legal graduate programs, such as MBA or Ph.D programs, are not eligible.) • You will enter a Presidential Management Fellowship or Legal Fellowship within 9 months after law school graduation.

If you intend to apply for a clerkship, fellowship, or a graduate law program, but have not been offered a position or accepted, your application will be routed to the Attorney General’s Honors Program. If you later accept a clerkship (or are accepted into a graduate law program), you may re-enter your application, add the specific clerkship/fellowship/graduate law program information, and transfer your application to the Summer Law Intern Program. The system will prompt you to select components participating in the SLIP (participating components differ between Programs). This option remains open until the Department finalizes its hiring pools, generally in early- to mid-October.

D. Joint-degree law students (J.D./L.LM): You are eligible if you are a current joint-degree student who is simultaneously pursuing a law degree and a graduate law degree (e.g., J.D./L.LM) who has completed at least one semester of law school by September 2, 2008. If you will complete academic requirements for both degrees, including a thesis, if required, and graduate from both programs in academic year 2008 (i.e., between October 1, 2008 and September 30, 2009), please see the comments in paragraph C, above. • You cannot practice as an attorney (engage in significant legal employment) between completion of law school academic requirements and completion of graduate law studies)

E. Joint-degree law students (J.D./Masters, Ph.D., etc): You are eligible if you are a current joint degree student who is simultaneously pursuing a law degree and a non-legal graduate degree (e.g., J.D./MBA or J.D./Ph.D.) who has completed at least one semester of law school (equivalent to full-time law study) by September 2, 2008. You do not currently have to be taking law classes (e.g., the current or future semester may be study directed toward the other degree). If you will complete academic requirements for both degrees, including a thesis, if required, and graduate from both programs in academic year 2008 (i.e., between October 1, 2008 and September 30, 2009), please see the comments in paragraph C, above. • You cannot practice as an attorney (engage in significant legal employment) between completion of law school academic requirements and completion of graduate studies)

How To Apply

Applicants apply online between July 25 and September 2, 2008 (midnight, Eastern time). The Summer Law Intern Program is centrally managed by OARM; but each participating component makes independent hiring decisions. We recommend that applicants read the application checklist and assemble requested information before starting their application. Individuals who need an accommodation in order to apply should contact us for assistance.

September 2, 2008 (midnight, Eastern Time; 11:00 p.m. Central Time; 10:00 p.m. Mountain Time; 9:00 p.m. Pacific Time).

Once you access the AVUE Digital Services’ online application, you must create a user identification and a password. You may enter and exit the application and make changes until you certify it prior to submission. Once you certify and submit your application, you cannot update or change it.

Be sure to list a current e-mail address. The Department will use the e-mail address you provide in your application to communicate with you throughout the hiring process. Messages from the Department come from “mail@avuedigitalserviees.com.” You may want to add this address to your computer personal address book to ensure it is not removed by spam or junk mail filters.

Do not certify and submit your application until you are absolutely sure it is complete. There is no way to correct or modify your application once you submit it. The online system is designed to prevent multiple submissions from the same candidate. The Department will disqualify any candidate who submits more than one application.

The online application will prompt you to submit your transcript and resume data in appropriate fields. You may enter data either by “cutting and pasting” from a Word or Word Perfect file, or by typing in the relevant information. The Department does not accept resumes or transcripts submitted separately from the online application.

The Department does not accept cover letters, writing samples, or letters of recommendation as part of the application packet. If you are selected for an interview, you will receive further instructions about when, where, and how to submit writing samples.

The online application system will send you an e-mail message confirming receipt of your application.

Selection for Consideration (Interviews)

Candidate Selection:Each participating component nominates candidates to be considered for employment. The total number of candidates interviewed depends on budget limitations, the ratio of nominations to available positions, and mission requirements.

Notification of Selection:

The Department issues notice of selection for further consideration by e-mail using the e-mail address you provided in your application. All email messages from the Department are issued from mail@avuedigitalservices.com. We recommend that you enter this into your computer’s personal address book to ensure that you receive messages issued on behalf of the Department through our private contractor. Selection for further consideration will also be posted on the application website that you can access using the User ID and password you created when you applied.

Please note that being selected for consideration does not guarantee that a candidate will be contacted, interviewed, or hired by the component(s) that selected him or her. Some components hire on the basis of the application materials alone. Components select both primary and alternate candidates for further consideration. The exact number depends on their hiring needs.

• Attorney Recruitment Coordinators: Individuals in each component who are available to assist you regarding your interview. • Writing Samples: A chart of specific component requirements regarding submission of writing samples, including when and where to submit a writing sample, recommended content, length, format, and subject matter. Do not submit a writing sample unless you are selected for further consideration and the selecting component requires one. • Interviews: Most components do not conduct formal interviews. Each component is directly responsible for reviewing applicant’s submissions and arranging for interviews, if desired. Some components do not interview at all, but hire summer interns solely on the basis of application submissions. Components that elect to interview summer candidates will conduct those interviews in a variety of ways – by telephone, in field offices (if available) or through video conferencing. Interviewing components will contact candidates individually to arrange for an interview time. Again, please note that being selected for consideration does not guarantee that a candidate will be contacted, interviewed, or hired by the component that selected him or her. Components select both primary candidates and alternate candidates, based on their hiring needs.

What To Bring to an Interview:

We suggest the following:

— The name and telephone number of the Attorney Recruitment Coordinator for any component with which you are interviewing
— Addresses of the interview site.
— Updated resume (in case the interviewer requests a copy)
— Two forms of photo identification (for access to buildings)
— Notepad and pen

Application Checklist

*Before you begin the application process, you should assemble the following: (if applicable)

o create a unique password for accessing your application (no more than 10 characters) and make a note of it; you will be prompted by the system for this password. You will use this password to access your application

o a permanent e-mail address that will not change during the course of the application and hiring process (September 2008 – January 2009)

o your Social Security number (US citizens) or other unique identification number (non-US citizens)

o your resume, your most recent law school transcript, and your law school’s grading scale and/or evaluation process

o information about your undergraduate degree (e.g, type of degree, major, year received, name of school, city and state where school is located)

o information about your non-legal graduate degree(s) (e.g, type of degree, major, year received or will receive, name of school, city and state where school is located)

o if you are a third-year law student who will serve in a judicial clerkship in the fall following your graduation, information about your judicial law clerkship (e.g., full name of court, dates of clerkship, name of judge, telephone number in chambers)

o information about previous DOJ experience (e.g., employing component, name of supervisor, supervisor’s phone number)

o information about other legal and/or non-legal experience including names of supervisor(s), organization name(s), telephone number(s) of supervisor(s), dates of employment, brief description of responsibilities

o a minimum of three references who may be contacted, including names, relationships, telephone, mailing and e-mail addresses

o names of all law school courses you are taking in fall 2005 and the number of credit hours

o information about any unique qualifications, training, special skills or competencies relevant to your application for employment

  • Review eligibility criteria and instructions.
  • Provide data as prompted and click the “continue and save this information” button at the bottom of each screen. Please note that some data is required (e.g., citizenship). If you do not answer required questions, the program will prompt you to answer them before allowing you to save your information and continue to the next section
  • After you have completed your application, we strongly suggest that you print and review it before you certify and submit it to the Department. To protect the integrity of the information you submit on your application, the system does not allow changes to be made to data once it has been certified and submitted. Prior to actually certifying and submitting your application, you may update or change it provided you save your changes on the application program. You may print a blank application, a partially completed application, or your completed application. However, once you certify your application and submit it, the program will not permit you to make further changes. We strongly recommend that you print a copy of your application and review it carefully prior to certifying and submitting it.
  • When you have reviewed you application for completeness and accuracy, certify and submit it to the Department for consideration for employment. You will receive an e-mail confirmation that we have received your application.
  • CAUTION: Due to the volume of applications submitted in the last few days prior to the deadline, we advise you to apply early; however, if you expect your school to announce Law Review membership or moot court teams prior to our application deadline, you may wish to delay submitting your application in order to include that information on your application. The Department does not accept applications received after the September 2nd deadline [12 midnight, Eastern Time; 11:00 p.m. Central Time; 10:00 p.m. Mountain Time; 9:00 p.m. Pacific Time]. This is an absolute receipt deadline. Loss of electricity or Internet access is not an excuse for missing the deadline.
