About CHCI

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) is a national non-profit and non-partisan Hispanic educational organization whose mission is to develop the next generation of Latino Leaders. CHCI seeks to accomplish its mission by offering educational and leadership development programs, services, and activities that promote the growth of participants as effective professionals and strong leaders. Our programs are designed to increase the participation of young Hispanics in both public and private sectors. Our vision is an educated and civically active Latino community who participates at the local, state, and federal policy decision-making levels.

Internship Descriptions

Intern – Office of the President & CEO Help manage correspondence, scheduling and travel arrangements as well as managing administrative support as needed. Excellent communication and organizational skills are necessary; interaction with corporate executives, Members of Congress, their support staff, and various high-level government officials. The position will also produce various reports, meeting content materials, and provide logistical and administrative support to fundraising efforts.

Intern – Office of the Chief Operating Officer Provide support on matters related to resource development, strategic planning and board governance. The position will also provide support for programmatic related functions.

Intern – Strategic Alliances and Events Department Provide logistical support during CHCI’s annual events such as the Public Policy Conference, Reyes of Comedy Night, and Gala. The CHCI Gala is the largest Annual Latino Event in Washington, D.C., therefore great attention to detail and excellent organizational and time management skills are required. Help create themes for events, design stages and floor plans, and draft event programs. Help confirm talent for keynote speakers, Gala award recipients, and Comedy night performers. Provide support with Regional fundraising events throughout the U.S. and make travel arrangements for invitees.

Intern – Human Resources Department Provide support to the HR Manager. Help set up new HR information systems and update personnel files. Provide support with the restructuring process and rewrite job descriptions, employee handbook, and benefit orientation packets. Provide support with payroll and Benefit Administration. Help with employee survey and benchmarking process.

Intern – Communications and Marketing Department Help draft, pitch and edit Press Releases and Media Advisories for CHCI programs, and events. Draft articles for CHCI Newsletter and other marketing collateral, as needed. Compose and maintain press lists and provide support for media at events as assigned. Edit new and existing marketing collateral for sponsorship and program outreach. Organize press packets for events. Help maintain CHCI’s Web site. Prepare and distribute daily clips for CHCI staff on Hispanic education, statistics, sponsors, competitors and other relevant topics. Catalog all media coverage.

Requirements

  • -College Graduated or pursuing a college degree.
  • -Strong computer literacy is necessary
  • -Work a minimum of 30hrs/week
  • -Must multi-task and work well under pressure
  • -Excellent logistical and organizational skills required
  • -Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • -A professional appearance and telephone manner is essential.
  • -Strong team player; works well under pressure
  • -Must be a self-starter and independent, who understands the need for detail
  • -Must be creative and flexible in order to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities.
  • -Need to be independent and a self-starter Bilingual skills (Spanish-English) a plus
  • -If participating in a school internship program, requirements for that program must be submitted
  • -Make a final presentation of your choice on how your newfound skills will help your career and personal goals
  • -Commitment to helping Hispanic youth, their parents, and educational personnel

Perks

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute has a separate Public Policy Fellowship Program that runs from September through May and a Summer Internship Program from June through August. These are nationally-recognized programs offered to the best and brightest Latino youth from around the country. Interns at CHCI get to participate in some of the Fellowship and Internship Program seminars and activities. Seminar topics include Communicating with the Media, Public Communication, Strategic Negotiations and Coalition Building, Challenging Stereotypes, Time and Stress Management, Financial Planning, Running for Office and Winning, Beyond Networking, Campaign Training, Tri-Caucus Orientation, The Built Environment and its Impact on Public Health, U.S. Immigration Policy: Prospects for the Future, Hispanic Opportunities in Federal Government, Advocacy, Lobbying and the Media in your Issue Campaign, New Generation of State Leaders in Maryland, among others.

All internship positions are unpaid, however a stipend for transportation will be granted.
