New Mexico’s large number of Native Americans has made two federal agencies focused on Indian affairs the largest federal employers in the state. HHS‘s Indian Health Service and the DOI’s Bureau of Indian Affairs employ 2,800 and 2,500 in the state respectively. New Mexico also has a large DoD presence. The Air Force Materiel Command employs 1,700 and the well-known Army Test and Evaluation Command at White Sands employs over 900.
