Hawaii has a relatively large federal workforce for its population. Nearly 75 percent of the state’s federal employees are employed by the Department of Defense, with nearly 9,000 employed by the U.S. Navy. The Navy ’s Pacific Command is headquartered at Camp H.M. Smith, outside of Honolulu employing nearly 5,000. The Transportation Security Administration, the Army Installation Management Agency, and the Army Medical Command each employ over 1,000 Hawaiians.
