Nearly one-third of Colorado’s federal employees work for the Defense Department, mostly for the Department of the Air Force. The Air Force Space Command and the U.S. Air Force Academy, both in Colorado Springs, are the state’s largest defense-related federal employers. Four DOI agencies: the National Park Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Bureau of Land Management, each employ more than 1,000 in the state.
