5 Most Exciting Government Jobs

5 Most Exciting Government Jobs

Kyle Stone | Associate Editor, GovCentral

Fresh ideas. Innovative viewpoints. Commitment to the highest standards of excellence. A thrilling, almost grueling physical component.

Doesn’t sound like the average job for the federal government, right? Perhaps not. But just because every government job isn’t thrilling, we should not come to the conclusion that EVERY government job is boring. In fact, I was so tired of hearing people stereotype government work as antiquated, tedious, and methodical, that I decided to create the ultimate guide to exciting government careers.

What I learned in this process was that exciting government jobs do not only exist in abundance, but also that some fast-paced government careers are actually in high demand right now. So, if you’re feeling like you’ll never actually see the action involved in a “high-velocity career path,” it might be time to think again.

Here are the five most exciting and rewarding Federal Government Careers:

I'm 57 years old. Served in Vietnam, would gladly carry a weapon in the middle east or the borders of the U.S. I have a degree, have worked all over our great nation . I was laid off in Feb of this year and it seems there is nobody willing to give me a second look. I am educated, experanced, willing to lay down my life for my country, AND THE BEST I CAN GET IS UNEMPLOYMENT BENIFITS?

Hey neomo123. The problem might be your location. Come on down to the border and I'll garauntee your DHS attitude will change. Goodtimes here. Also get away from your desk and develop something.

At 50 I started a new career. Ten years later I have been making six figures every year without the need for a degree. No two days are ever the same; the "pucker factor" can get really high, at times; there is the same GI "hurry-up-and-wait" mentality; and, a person of average intelligence is considered a genius. There are even days when you pinch yourself to make certain you are awake as they are PAYING you to do this job. The Coast Guard can't touch this pay!

Yeah, as a 50-year-old military retiree I should be able to get one of these exciting jobs! Perhaps I'll join the Secret Service! There is no age discrimination right? Or maybe I could train to be a scientist - yeah, that's the ticket!!!

Homeland Security is the most exciting Government Job!? I set behind a desk everyday and preform the same "exciting" tasks everyday. Day in and Dayout, its the same everyday. All the excitement is too much for me to handle, I end up crying myself to sleep every night. But heh the pays good so whatever! lol

You know, I should write a feature on that, and write more about the postal service in general. Look for something soon!

Kyle, I believe that you forgot to mention the postal worker. I recall reading about a postal worker who opened a restaurant on the side. How dull is that!

kimpm1, that is good to hear! Maybe this list should be expanded to "10 Most Exciting Jobs" in order to be more inclusive.

My job as a Labor Relations Specialist is never ever boring! Practically every day a strange new situation arises that must be dealt with using a wide variety of tactics depending on the problem. Never a dull moment!
