Department of the Navy
Kyle Stone | GovCentral Contributing Writer
The US Navy’s primary mission is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression, and maintaining freedom of the seas. That mission includes the support of all military departments of the United States.
The navy is a component force of the U.S. Department of Defense, a cabinet-level agency reporting directly to the president. The secretary of the navy is a civilian appointed by the president as head of the Department of the Navy and is responsible for its operation, organization, function, and efficiency. The secretary is assisted in this function by other members of the executive administration, including the civilian executive assistants—the undersecretary of the navy, the assistant secretaries, and the general counsel of the navy. Each civilian executive assistant is assigned a particular area of responsibility and serves as the principal adviser to the secretary in that area.
