Frustrated searching for a federal job? It may not all be your fault. Though government spending is still increasing, the growth of new federal government jobs is actually slowing down. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, federal government employment is expected to decrease by 3.7 percent by 2016. Though there will still be several thousands of federal vacancies due to baby boomer retirements, most new government and policy job growth will come state and local governments.
These government areas in particular are expected to show steady job growth, with overall employment expected to increase by over 1.4 million, or 7.4 percent over the next ten years. Though sometimes lower-paying, these positions usually require shorter hiring processes than their federal counterparts.
Follow these five steps to find the perfect state or local government job by clicking “next” below, or click on a specific topic that is of interest to you.

I am 51 and was laid off from a cabinet design position. I have a BS degree but I have yet to use it. If I can give some advise. Don' t chase the money. When I graduated, I had a well paying sales and design position . Now that the economy has changed and that no longer holds water, I lack the experience needed to land most jobs related to my degree.

I think this article was very informative regardless of the mistakes. It was to point. Nevertheless, my state and local governments usually hire political appointees. Thus, many qualified applicants relocate to other states. Therefore, like them I too am seeking a new neighborhood to work for the government. Cheers.

I would surely hope that the US Government hires people who take the time to spell correctly, use proper speech/grammar, and know that the word is metropolitan, one word folks. Or simply write metro NYC, Metro Chicago...ugh. Show the educational level that you've achieved in your writing. Proper grammar, speech, and writing skills are the key to respect in the business community.
