The Best and Worst Departments to Work for Now
On the flip side, there are many sectors not hiring at all or are laying people off. This is a predominate theme recently with State governments, where tight budgets are forcing them to trim employees and programs. This is also going to be common with State governments that don’t accept Stimulus funding.

I also expected a list of departments, with some statistics on needs, etc.

I don't know about others, but when I saw the headline, "The Best and Worst Departments to Work for Now", I expected a list of Departments, not a list of more articles.

It's ovious that the white house and the democratic congress intented that illegal immagrants receive money & jobs from the stimulus package. They are buying votes and have little or no values like that of our founding fathers.

I notice that BEST Departments seemed to be defined as those where one could expect to get a quick hire/decent pay/have longevity in that job. This is my interpretation only. Conversely, I assume WORST means those Departments/Agencies that are laying off, freezing wages, and have future expectations of additional cuts. Again, this is only my interpretation. HOWEVER, in reality/also in my opinion, a GOOD job is one that certainly includes the above mentioned attributes AS WELL AS one where one is not subject to verbal abuse on a daily basis but given encouragement for a job well done (or incentives based on that individual to boost their performance). A GOOD job also includes adequate communication, freedom of expression without reprisal, and having a feeling of "ease" when one comes in each day, not fearing for what might happen, will I be publicly ridiculed, demeaned and disrespected. A positive work environment also includes knowing that doing MORE than average, giving MORE than average, being creative, and contributing will be rewarded. If this is what you define as a GOOD job, I highly suggest researching all departments/agencies that interest you (even speaking to insiders) to determine if an "old boys network" is in place. Unfortunately, it is alive and well in many areas and you may be better off not joining the ranks of public servants.

en2192, I'm sorry you didn't find the information about the DHS, DOT, DOE, NOAA, EEOC, Economic Development Admin, and science-related funding jobs relevant and useful. Further, noting that many state departments have laid people off (see second page) doesn't seem like speculation that State Government isn't the best place to find a job- they look like facts to me. We are just giving advice, but by no means want to tell people they shouldn't apply to a job in the state department if they find a great opportunity.

This article is vague.
The theme of this three-paragraph article is: "We SPECULATE that the stimulus package MIGHT help some federal agencies hire new employees; we SPECULATE that state agencies will fire employees."
So what! The stimulus package is less then two months old...hardly enough time to impact any job-hiring process in the government.
GovCentral, please do some research into who is actually currently hiring before you decide to fill up our inboxes with shoddy articles filled only with speculation.
