this person has never applied for or worked for the federal government.

these procedures might work in the private sector, but the 'boys and girls club' does not allow you to just walk in the front door and announce your arrival.

steps 1-8 is very feasible. but thats as far as it gets. the only way you get to communicate to the inside is know a member and ask them to post notes on the inside walls.

this is not the 70's my friend. if you're going to be the expert and talk as if - cut and pasting from old newspapers does not count. so here is the true way to get in:

    1. write a great resume. and then don't plan on using it. you'll just be cut and pasting parts of it later.
    2. write a great cover letter. you will be using it.
    3. find 2 or 3 great job portals to attack. monster will not be one of them - especially for government.
    4. schedule job finding time. if you think you are going to get a job posting here and there - you are terribly wrong.
    5. post that resume and that cover letter to jobs that fit you. do not lie to yourself about what jobs you can do. remember - the key is to get in and then roam. this is not the private sector. get the job first and then walk around daily and carry a copy of the resume and cover letter.
    6. now use a networking tool like linkedin. find people who know people and cozy up. i know kevin bacon, but he does not know that. but if i tried i could get someone to tell him we are great friends.
    7. organize your work. do not just apply for a bunch of jobs. use strategy! apply, record where you applied, file the responses. you'll see who is really paying attention to you. and then zero in on the area where you are getting bites. you can't catch saltwater fish in the colorado river. go to the ocean.
    8. take another look at that resume ad cover letter. does it need more love? you bet! perfection is a state of mind - not a state of reality. we can always do better.
    9. always keep your ears open. always tell people you are looking. always carry a business card. always be working on a 2 minute sales pitch (practice this in elevators - 2 floors at a time). get a hair cut and brush the teeth more often. we are out of work - lets not look like it.
    10. repeat

this is real. and this comes from a pro. not a recent college graduate hired by monster for pennies on the dollar.

look its tough to get the initial look, but if you waste effort - it will never happen. if you can not take yourself and that job hunt seriously, then why would an employer. they can see it when you are not to concerned. get in it and start swinging!
