I hear many people going through the same thing. Although I am not a vet, I am a college grad searching for all types of work in the gov. Great pay, benefits, etc. I agree with the disgruntled feeling from NEVER even getting a call from the hiring manager or HR department. I believe its these people who are not doing their jobs to equally consider applicants. I believe like a salesman having to make 50 cold calls a day; these hiring managers should have to make 50 calls a day during the hiring times to each applicant, even if they lack some experience or education.
Ironically, I have gone into several interviews with the hiring party not even knowing I have a college degree!!! Seriously, these people must come into work everyday, play on their computer, pick a few applicants the computer system picked up through word search, go to lunch, come back, maybe call on those particular applicants, and then go home. Meanwhile there are dozens of people great for the job that the word search may not have picked up. I feel I am an intelligent person who things deep into things and would be skillful for many departments within the government. Try to stay positive people. Don't think its you. There are millions in the same boat.

I have been out almost a year, I will be graduating in May and I can't get hired for S&&&, I have done my resume a 100 different ways, I need help. I'm a single mother of a young child, and I got preference and nothing.

I agreed with you bforbes, I served for over twenty years, returned to school got a degree in Network Security (GPA 3.47), I study on my own and received certification some of this government jobs require. I’ve been out ten years and even with veteran’s preference not a single call from any government agency. Veteran’s preference my #@&, but may just be venting

Actually AttySharonL, you are incorrect about this, unless you are just venting about attorney positions. Although there are many veterans that work for the government, even with the so called veteran's preference from what I've seen, it is more difficult for veterans unless you have worked in a field that only has a federal counterpart and no private sector counterpart. Everything else is open field. I retired from the military 13 years ago and was just able to land a federal job. Not because I was in the military, but because I spent the time to retrain, educate myself, and gain experience in a field that they were looking to hire for. Your GPA is also important; it directly impacts the GS level you're hired at along with your level of experience. The process unfortunately takes a long time and applicants get discouraged as I have over the years, but it finally happened for me. Patience is a virtue.

To get a government job: 1. You get automatic preference if you previously served in the military, have Veterans Preference, or military spouse preference.

If you do not have any of the above you will NOT get a job in the federal government. Government jobs are designed to be post-military jobs. And if you are an Attorney seeking a job in the government without military experience- DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! You will NOT get hired as an attorney for the government without previous JAG or military experience. The reason is that even if you are highly qualified you will NOT get the job over someone with previous military experience.

Read the job descriptions. The job postings for Attorneys basically say you have to have experience in the government to qualify for the job, but how can you get experience in the government unless they hire you? Easy- you have to have previous experience in the military or as a JAG Officer. JAG Officers and Veterans have preference.

It does NOT matter what Law School you attended, what your GPA was, class ranking, or credentials when applying for a government job as an attorney. All they are looking at is whether or not you served in the military and if so then you have what they are looking for.

Another way to get a job in the federal government- Join the Rerserves.

I had been applying for Federal Job since last August. All my applications were acknowledged, was advised that my applications were forwarded to the Hiring Manager. Never been called for interview, at the end I'm receiving notice that I was not selected. Would appreciate any further advise that could help me be hired in Federal.
