The Best Entry Level Government Jobs
Kyle Stone | Editor
There is a lot of discussion about how government-sector jobs are more stable than others in our faltering economy and about how government hiring trends are predicted to be more resistant to the economic downturn than other sectors. Unfortunately, this doesn’t do you a whole lot of good, if you’ve got no idea of where to start in order to get hired.
We’ve taken a look at the salaries, hiring trends, and projected growth rates of over 50 government-related careers, and have assembled a guide to some of the best government careers at the entry level. No matter where you want to go with your career, these jobs are ‘smart picks’.
Note: Before you get too excited, keep in mind that a college degree is still required for several of the entry-level government jobs listed below.
Business Operations Specialists
Police and Sheriffs Patrol Officers
Executive Secretaries and Administrative Assistants
Airline Pilots, Copilots, and Flight Engineers

Good Morning... I am new to this site. I am a high school graduate with no other degrees. I was a full time Mom. The training and experience I have had is your basic on the job training and I can learn anything I have found out. Common sense works wonders! I was laid off in March and I am now seeking a job where I hope there is a need for an office clerk/clerical position without all the degrees. Thank-you everyone and anyone for any help and time with this.
Sincerely, Deborah Durkee

Hi I'm hoping that anyone could help me or at least give me advice on this one. In May of next year I would be graduatin from college, with my Associates In Arts with a concentration in Political Science, my plan is to apply or aim a job position with the State Government, mostly I'm aiming or I'm interested in obtaining an adminstritive job with the State Government; I have internship experience with the State Representative. Most importantly where could I apply or where would my degree would be most useful. If someone could give me advice, I would appreciated.

Hello everyone, I am a first time user to this site who is asking for your help in finding a career, not a job, in the Criminal Justice field. I am graduating in the next year or so and am constantly worried about finding a job. My primary goal is to work as a Probation officer at any government level whether it is local, state, or federal. If that doesn’t work out, then my second goal is either to work with Homeland Security using my skills as a native Arabic speaker or work as a District Adjudication officer. If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to e-mail me at my personal e-mail address at wgz7bp@aol.com.

Hello Everyone. I am new to this site. I am a recent gradute with a Master's Degree in Social Work. . I have 10+ years experience working with individuals especially children. I worked as a Para-Professional for children with Autism and as Youth Counselor. In addition, I have administrative and medial assistance experience. I interned at the Veterans Affairs Day Treatment Center and at a school-based youth services program in which I conducted individual and group therapy to individuals who were mentally ill and chemically addicted. I am looking for an opportunity to join a team that provides mental health services to the community.

Bcubedreg, I'm new to this website. I'm currently serving in a dual status GS-7 step 7 Production Controller position in the great state of Iowa. I have 27 years of green suit time as of December. I have 16 years of Tech time as of September, bought back active time. Minimum retirement age for my bracket is 56+2 months. I wish to do 30 years in the green suit before I leave service. Looking for Non-dual tech positions but in Iowa they are extremely thin. Have family in Florida so could re-locate if required. Been through a few briefs with the HR folks (mid-career counseling etc.) Looking to stay in the transportation/dispatching aspect of GSA fleet vehicles or similar. Have most time in those areas. What do you think? Any room for an old warhorse green suiter looking to finish out the career?
