Best Employers for Workers Over 50

Did you know that by 2016, one-third (33.5 percent) of the total US workforce will be age 50 or older? In the government sector, this statistic is actually even higher; in fact, 44 percent of the current Government workforce will be eligible for retirement within the next five years.

The AARP’s ‘Best Employers for Workers Over 50’ is an annual program that recognizes companies and organizations whose practices and policies specifically address issues which affect our aging labor force. Through taking the specific needs of aging employees into consideration, these companies are effectively ensuring that some of our most essential industries will remain productive and secure in upcoming decades.

It is worth noting that the National Institute of Health ranked eleventh in the 2008 listing. Quoting from the AARP site: “The Institutes have made enhancements to benefits following employee requests, including: adding high-deductible insurance plans and strengthening support for tele-work and flexible-work schedules—applying directly to NIH’s mature employees.”
